Diamond-like Carbon (DLC) coatings are a form of AR coating where high transmission is traded for vastly improved wear performance, high mechanical hardness and high resilience to external stress. Typically a DLC coating will transmit between 5-10% lower than an equivalent AR coatings however it is ideal for applications where the optic is exposed to harsh conditions such as corrosive liquids or corrosive environments. DLC coatings are designed to withstand sand, moisture, poor physical handling, extremes of temperature or pressure all while providing acceptable optical performance. DLC coatings are typically used in the infra-red spectrum using a high refractive index material such as Germanium; however the coating can be used in the visible range if necessary.
